Patients With No Residual Cancer In The Cystectomy Specimen (pT0 Disease): Are They Cured Of Bladder Cancer?
Friday, 16 June 2006 BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - In the May 2006 issue of the Journal of Urology, Palapattu and colleagues from the Bladder Cancer Research Consortium reviewed the records of 888 consecutive, evaluable patients who underwent radical cystectomy for TCC at 3 institutions over a 19 year period. Cystectomy was performed for CIS in 5 (9%), Ta in 2 (4%), T1 in 18 (32%), T2 in 29 (52%) and T3 in 2 (4%). Fifty nine patients were identified without carcinoma in the surgical specimen (7%). Two of these patients (3%) had evidence of lymph node metastasis.

The cohort consisted of 1,106 patients treated with 81 mg of BCG plus 50 MU IFN-alpha if BCG naïve, one-third of the BCG dose with 50 MU IFN-alpha if previously treated with BCG, or one-tenth the BCG dose with 100 MU IFN-alpha if previously intolerant to BCG. The inclusion criteria consisted of patients with all types of superficial bladder cancer, with or without CIS, and with or without prior intravesical chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
