BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - Treatment of hypogonadism with a long-acting intramuscular testosterone undecenoate (Nebido) was reviewed in several papers presented at the Annual Research Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.

Nebido was administered at 10-14 week intervals and produced improvement in sexual function and mood in 40 men reported by a German group headed by Dr. Christina Schumann.

Dr. Zitzmann, Munster, Germany reported 22 hypogonadal men who received Nebido for more than seven years. Serum trough levels at 10-14 week intervals remained within low-normal range.

"There were no significant problems with hemoglobin or PSA levels," Dr. Zitamann indicated. Bone density improved in all men. He concluded that, "convincing long-term safety data have been collected for up to seven years."

Nebido is not available in the U.S. but phase-3 trials may begin soon according to Indevus Pharmaceuticals who is licensing this product in the U.S. "A three-month Depo-Testosterone product may be a nice addition" to the U.S. market said Dr. Zitzmann.
