Giora Katz MD and Raoul Salup MD BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - "Bladder cancer continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Observations on the natural course of bladder cancer reveal the importance of early diagnosis to save lives. based on the AUA guidelines, NMP22 point of care test has been developed as an adjunct to cystoscopy in evaluating high risk patients for first time or recurrent bladder cancer. In this study we show that cystoscopy alone may miss existing bladder cancer. Combination of cystoscopy and NMP22 point of care test gives a negative predictive value higher than 99%, increasing confidence of the urologist in not missing existing cancers. The ease of use of NMP22 point of care test and prompt availability of result during same visit improve effectiveness and efficiency of care for high risk patients, suspected of having bladder cancer."
