SEATTLE, WA, USA (Press Release) - September 11, 2009

Online Destination Offers Key Resources and Content for Medical Students, Trainees,
Doctors and Urology Experts

UrologyMatch.com, a leading internet resource and online community designed to assist medical students, educators, and professionals in all aspects of studying and practicing urology, has launched the next generation of its website, co-founders Todd Morgan, MD and Alexander Kutikov, MD announced today. The re-launch of UrologyMatch.com incorporates all the information and tools to guide medical students interested in urology and the training process, and includes content that helps all urologists share the latest studies, techniques, and practices to advance their training.

“We are very excited to unveil the new site, which will continue to educate and inform individuals who are interested in urology.  The site seeks to educate and assist individuals during the long and complex process of becoming a successful urologic surgeon,” said Dr. Morgan. “We have also expanded the site to become more of a broad training destination for all urologists – not just medical students and trainees.”

UrologyMatch.com features content and valuable information that was previously difficult to obtain, including: inside information and tools for medical students hoping to successfully navigate the notoriously competitive application and "match" process, advice and analysis from experts in the field, questionnaires and surveys from residency directors and program chairs, and active forums for students, residents, and faculty to exchange questions and answers online. Content devoted to post-residency training includes sections on fellowship training as well as a job board. An expanding digital atlas of surgical cases facilitates the review of urologic procedures, and an interactive video library allows users to view and upload entire procedures or sections of a procedure online.

In launching the beta version of the website, UrologyMatch.com has partnered with Boston Scientific to support the site’s fresh appearance and updated functionality that will ensure UrologyMatch.com users continue to garner the most valuable experience possible when utilizing the website. The partnership with Boston Scientific will help UrologyMatch.com develop resources to grow, while serving the medical community with the most vital and up-to-date information of any urology resource on the web.

“UrologyMatch.com has always been about sharing information that we wished was available when we were in medical school and residency,” said Dr. Alex Kutikov, co-founder of the website. “When Boston Scientific expressed interest in supporting the site, we thought it was a perfect fit that dovetailed with our goal of providing the most vibrant on-line community for urologists and urologists-to-be.”

A report detailing the role third-party websites play in influencing medical students’ career paths, and the impact UrologyMatch.com had on medical students’ choices to pursue a career in urology during the 2007-2008 application process will be published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Surgical Education. According to the report, information on UrologyMatch.com had a significant influence on medical students’ decisions to specialize in urology, and impacted whether they applied to a particular program. Data from this study also suggested that UrologyMatch.com plays an important role in building a sense of community among urology trainees.

HISTORY AND PURPOSE

The site was initially conceived and started in 2003 by Todd Morgan and Alex Kutikov. When Dr. Morgan and Dr. Kutikov were at Harvard Medical School and had to decide on a specialty, they found it difficult to obtain good information about pursuing a career in urology, and how to approach the notoriously competitive and complex application and “match” process. UrologyMatch.com was launched to identify and share the information they felt should be available to students, administrators, program directors, and other medical professionals.
