SUI Video - Diagnosis and Epidemiology The Role of Somatic Innervation in Maintaining Urinary Continence Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) may result from insufficient urethral closure, which may be associated with urethral hypermobility or intrinsic sphincter deficiency. Emerging research into the somatic innervation of the lower urinary tract suggests that both serotonin and norepinephrine act in the sacral spinal cord, and play a key role in regulating contraction of the urethral sphincter to help maintain sufficient urethral closure.
